Sometimes you start something because you’re looking to try something new, or you’re working on making more money, or whatever. But then it turns into something so much more than you ever expected. That’s how Younique has been for me.
I started my journey in August 2014. (I still can’t believe it’s been four years now!) A very short summary of my reasons: we needed money since I was only working part time after little miss was born… and I wanted a deal on makeup. (100% honesty here!)
Over the past four years, my ‘why’ has grown… I do this for my family, I do it for the women I see who question their confidence and their beauty… and I also do it for me, because it’s helped me find myself again after I became a mom. I saw all my reasons for doing this biz reflected over and over again at the Younique 2018 Convention in San Antonio.
Before I get to all my ‘whys’ and what this biz means to me, let’s talk convention. Every year we have general sessions where Corporate celebrates our successes in the past year, and we look forward to some amazing developments for both us presenters, as well as our customers. The energy in the room is INCREDIBLE… and this year felt like the most energetic of all. For one, big changes came to our compensation plan: hello car bonuses available to EVERY level of the company and making it easier for new presenters to earn more earlier on!
Then we also have classes… This year I took classes in everything from tools to build our businesses, to how to become a better leader. Even though it was a range of classes, there was a general theme throughout: “You – yes, you – are your most important tool.” You, who you are, matters. You, and how you spend your time, matters. You are powerful… but you need to believe you can before you do.
Because, yes, this international beauty business I’m in? Mindset matters soooo much. Do you know how hard it can be for some people to put themselves out there, whether it be through a selfie or a video?
We worry about feeling judged. We worry we’re not good enough, we worry we don’t know enough. We worry that we’re not enough (that’s the whole scarcity culture Brene Brown talks about, that I blogged about here). And when we worry, we bury ourselves. We don’t think our story is valuable.
I’m here to tell you: it is. Your story matters. YOU matter. And you – yes you – are beautiful, inside and out.
But wait, isn’t Younique a makeup and skincare company? Yup, it most definitely is… but it’s about more than that too. It’s about finding ourselves, knowing our worth, and uplifting and empowering others along the way.
One of the things I’ve noticed in my last four years with Younique… women apologize for what they see as their downfalls profusely. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve received a bare-faced selfie (so that I can color match) with some negative comment attached to it…
I look so terrible.
Ugh that’s an awful picture.
My scar looks so bad in this pic – please ignore it!
I’ll send it if you promise to delete it because I look so scary.
Yes, these are the comments I get on a regular basis. We are SO hard on ourselves… and we are so quick to share what we don’t like about ourselves instead of celebrating what we love about ourselves instead.
Then there’s my team too… often when someone joins the Inspired Beauties they’re worried what friends and family might think. They don’t think they can make live videos, or post a selfie. But we work together, and they receive training – at their own pace – that helps them find their voice, and their confidence, to do amazing things and help people find some phenomenal makeup and skincare in the process.
Like I said: we’re about a whole more than makeup and skincare.
Younique convention celebrates us… our friendships, our teams, our stories, our journey to finding ourselves. But all the free new products aren’t bad either. Convention is one of my most favorite times of year, and it felt extra special this year… three gals from my team joined me this year, and next year, at least 3 more are planning on coming too. It’s like a girls weekend away — something this mama really needed to be honest — but it’s also a work trip, where we learn, grow, and get so pumped up for all the amazing things Younique has in store for us this coming year.
