When it comes to Summer makeup for me lately, how much, or how little, I wear depends on the day and what’s on the agenda. Either way, I want to feel comfortable — with no makeup sliding off — and I want to protect my skin. Here are a few makeup tips and tricks for rocking that makeup and taking care of your skin in the Summer weather. (More tips and tricks can be found in last year’s post here). Exfoliate and moisturize
We tend to think of dry skin needing exfoliation in the dry Winter months, but exfoliation continues to be important in the Summer too. Not only will exfoliating get rid of dry patches, but it brightens up skin tone too (Plus, if you’re using self tanners, it’s especially important). To exfoliate either use a mask, like this one, or create your own facial scrub.
After you exfoliate, treat your skin with a moisturizer that helps nourish the skin. One of my favorite new Youlogy skincare products is the day cream. You can choose which 3 boosters to add to the moisturizer, including either a tint or environmental shield.
Switch up your foundation
I’m not just talking about changing to your Summer color – although that’s important too! Rather, with the weather changes, your skin’s needs change too. It might be time to change the kind of foundation you use as well.
Does your skin get oily during the Summer? Consider using a pressed powder or liquid foundation. Do you tend toward dry skin? A BB cream would be a great alternative. (Need help color matching for your Summer makeup? Take the survey and get a personalized foundation recommendation).
Get a safe Summer glow
For a beautiful natural-looking glow, my go-to is bronzer. Apply this Summer makeup onto your cheekbones and then up onto the forehead and along the jaw line. My rule of thumb to make it look natural: apply in the shape of a 3. Bonus, you can wear bronzer on more than just your cheekbones (see the tutorial).
Rock that waterproof mascara
Not going to lie – there are some days that I only wear mascara (along with some SPF!) Particularly on days that I know I’m going to be playing in the water with the kids, I want to make sure my mascara stays in place. Thank goodness for Younique’s new waterproof mascara. It gives a crazy amount of length and volume and stays in place. (Watch it be put to the test here). Just be sure to have a quality makeup remover to take it off at the end of the day!
Keep your makeup in place
Summer means heat and sweat, lots of sweat, but I don’t want my makeup running down my face. Setting spray (and setting powder) to the rescue! I recommend using a spray for normal or dry skin; when applying, spray in the shape of an X and then a T to make sure both your eye makeup and face makeup gets set in place. For oily or normal skin, opt for a setting powder. When applying the powder, use a fan brush and lightly dust on, or use a bigger brush and blot (not wipe) on. It can also be used as oil control throughout the day.
Don’t forget your SPF!
Last but certainly not least, SPF coverage is a must when it comes to Summer makeup and skincare, and you have options for WHEN in your skincare routine you apply that coverage.
Use a Protecting Veil — like Younique’s new SPF 30 one — after applying moisturizer, and under your makeup; as broad spectrum protection, it’s also great at preventing premature aging. And/or apply a finishing powder, like this one, that helps blur fine lines and wrinkles — acting like a filter for your skin — while also giving you SPF protection as well. Bonus: the built-in brush allows you do touch ups on the go, if need be.
Whether you’re rocking a full face of makeup this Summer, or prefer just a touch of makeup, I hope these Summer makeup tips and tricks help you feel beautiful and confident. Any questions? Ask away!
